As Edison knows, what good is celebrating your
birthday—unless you can share it with 500 of your closest nightlife
habitués, models, designers, cabaret performers, photogs, and other
assorted nocturnal denizens. His face was everywhere, the invite
fluttering up and down
Washington Avenue. Mind you, this is a guy who’ll give you the
shirt off his back—as in swag bags with tees from Underdog Denim and
FACA. We’re talking butter soft tees—as well as free vodka. The
club was packed. Once known as Amika (and before that, Shadow
Lounge), 1532
Washington
is now Dream, all gussied up in bordello red, which suits the club’s
new tagline: “Reality is overrated.” Try surreal instead—for
the night was nothing if not another one of those good old-fashioned
Miami Beach
cat-walking, tail-shaking, ass-cracking, nude-strutting, camel-toed,
sidesplitting, crowd-pleasing free-for-alls. Just another night on
the Beach, as they say—and thank heavens that Edison was around to
play host.
Downstairs, DJ Le Brion was bouncing off the
walls, inciting the crowd, which had surrounded the catwalk for the
Underdog Denim fashion show. Chyna was in the house, as was Mykel
Stevens (Back Door Bamby? Hello?), and that irrepressible
girl wonder, Holly—and even Mister Michael Adorable Superman made a
walk-through (fresh off his cameo at Black Party in
New York).
The lights went down—and the sound went up—and suddenly there were
four hottie boyz showcased in four glass-enclosed booths. Streaked
in blue, red, and violet, like a walk through post-apocalyptic
Miami, the models slunk and strutted down the runway. Hot boyz in
their undies—for the crowd’s delectation: I’ll take one of that,
and one of him—
Then there was anarchy on the runway as the catwalk opened up: to a
Russian robber baron werking fur, and a forked-tongue ringmistress
swathed in white ermine and fox—as well as a strip-teasing,
bare-naked, booty-baring girlboy. And woe to those who left before
the next show: a warped and deliciously twisted cabaret number done
to “Diamonds (Are a Girl’s Best Friend)” performed by the soon-to-be
stars of the Monday night show premiering at Dream on the 21st
of April. Imagine the KitKat Club appearing at le Moulin Rouge,
with a soupcon of Spiegelworld, and a dash of the nasty—and you’ve
got Mykel Stevens’s latest hit: Chat Noir Club. It’s the sort of
place where Dita Von Teese trashes it up with Lady Bunny and Joey
Arias—and where all bets are off. It sounds like Miami Beach’s
latest litter box—and leave it to Edison Farrow to kick it up
first. Happy Birthday, Edison—the Beach’s own Pied Piper, leading
us to the next party.
