That voice you
recognize but whose name escapes you, you’ve been dancing to her
voice night after night, at pool parties in South Beach and in
clubs in Manhattan— She’s got this buttery, sexy alto, so
smooth and easy— She’s got sweet, breezy soul.
That would be
Lisa Shaw, the Canadian songstress probably best known for her
work on the contagious track “Always,” from the Naked Music
compilation series – which have often seemed an outgrowth of the
legendary Sunday night Body and Soul parties in downtown
Manhattan. Having worked with Miguel Migs, Andy Caldwell, and
Blue Six, and many others known for their melange of house,
electronica, funk and soul, Ms. Shaw’s sultry voice is ideally
suited for those emotion-rich recordings which carry you from
club-late mornings into sun-drenched afternoons.
Primarily a
release party for her debut CD
Cherry, Ms. Shaw’s
recent gig at Joe’s Pub, complete with full live band, found her
singing the title cut as well as “Born to Fly” and several other
tracks from this long-awaited showcase for that well-loved
voice. But it was “Always” which brought the crowd to its feet
– and brought to mind again those days and nights when everyone
in the vicinity had succumbed to Ms. Shaw’s soulful, sexy
groove. Good times, no question. |
